How to choose your hunting camera

Do you want to find out more about your hunting grounds and the animals that live there? Have you already thought about installing a hunting camera, but never actually got round to it?

The criteria used to choose a trail cam are simple and correspond to your needs.

How to choose your hunting camera

1/ IMAGE QUALITY

Just like for any camera, the image quality depends on the resolution, or the number of pixels that make up your photo or video. The higher the number of pixels, the higher the quality of the image.

2/ Detection distance

The detection distance is the distance at which the sensor identifies an animal.

The more powerful the camera, the longer the detection distance. As a general rule, entry-level trail cams can detect movements at 10 metres, while more powerful camera traps can take pictures at 20 metres.

3/ Ease of reading

This depends entirely on what you're looking for! Screen or no screen, transmission by text message or retrieval of the SD card... There are countless solutions!

Screenless camera traps take pictures that you can only view on your computer after retrieving the SD card. This is not always practical, because you have to take the camera home to view the pictures, bring another SD card if you want to leave the camera where it is, or bring your computer with you.

It is easier to view the images on trial cams with a screen, provided that you go and retrieve the trial cam on the spot.

The most convenient solution is transmission by MMS, as soon as the pictures are taken! You can leave the camera on its own in the field for longer, provided that the battery lasts long enough.

One tip to avoid worrying about the battery. Equip your trial cam with a solar panel charger that is compatible with certain cameras.
